Bye Fife!

I have computer equipment for sale once again. This time it's a 21-inch Toshiba Interactive Multimedia Monitor, known as TIMM for short. Not only is this a really big screen, but it doubles as a television; there's a jack for your antenna and your VCR, and a remote so that you can goof off when you should be working. All this for only $700; call me at 320-5105 if you're interested.

Also, I'm just curious as to what the best offer might be for my PowerMac 7200/75. It's true that it's more than a year and a half old, which is fairly ancient by computer standards, but I have upgraded it from 8 megs of RAM to 24. Again, if you're interested, I'm at 320-5105.

Now, to straighten out, er, clarify the whole Dykes to Watch Out For mess. In the July issue, we ran episodes 264 and 265. Then last month, in August, we ran episodes 270 and 271. Now this month, we have the four episodes we skipped, namely numbers 266, 267, 268 and 269 (the latter of which is one of my all-time favorites). So next month, in the October issue, we will finally resume normal sequence with episodes 272 and 273. Sorry about the mixup. If anybody needs any plot details clarified, don't call me. Try Alison Bechdel's website at www.visi.com/~oprarie/ and maybe you can get an email off to her.

Speaking of websites, I promise to update mine in a few more days, after I recover from this issue. Thanks to everybody who reminded me that it was turning into a cobwebsite.

So, now, let's just chat a bit about the recent demise of our fairhaired governor, J. Fife Symington III. I couldn't ask for a better fourth anniversary present than for us to finally be rid of this tan blond despot. He exemplifies all the worst qualities of his political party: the shameless pandering to the wealthy and to corporate power, the willingness to bend over backwards to help polluters, developers and other parasites, and the supreme indifference to the health, education and welfare of a majority of the citizenry. Good riddance, indeed.

Fife's successor, Governor Hull, may not be much of an improvement in substance, though doubtless she will be in style. At the very least, Fife's wrongheaded school funding plans seem headed for yet another revision. Maybe someday they'll get it right.

Ms. Hull was recently quoted as saying that the trevails of Fife and of former governor Evan Mecham should not reflect badly on the people of Arizona. Well, excuse me, but of course they should! A majority of the voters of this state voted these yutzes into office, and if that doesn't reflect badly on them, then I don't know what will. Maybe we can find an even more surreal candidate in next year's election and go three for three, huh?
